2026 June 12
An observation tour of the historic Anglican Church in Panideniya, Peradeniya, was conducted on 09 May 2026 as an important preliminary step towards the restoration of the church, which is recognised for its significant historical, archaeological, and artistic value.
The programme was attended by the Rt. Rev. Nishantha Fernando, together with the Minister of Buddhism, Religious and Cultural Affairs, Hiniduma Sunil Senevi, Director General of Archaeology Senarath Wickramasinghe, Director General of the Central Cultural Fund Nilan Cooray, Professor Aruna Rajapaksa, officials of the Central Cultural Fund, and several invited guests.
Originally constructed in 1924 and formally opened in 1927, the church was first known as the “Training Colony Chapel.” Owing to its close proximity to the Teachers’ College in Peradeniya, the church also served for many years as the chapel of the Teachers’ College community.
The church is especially notable for its beautifully crafted wooden pillars and architectural features that reflect Sri Lankan artistic traditions and local cultural identity. However, the structure sustained severe damage following Cyclone “Ditwa,” creating an urgent need for conservation and restoration efforts.
During the visit, attention was drawn to the importance of preserving the church as a valuable part of the nation’s religious and cultural heritage. Discussions were also held regarding the commencement of a formal restoration programme with financial assistance from the Central Cultural Fund.
Also present at the occasion were Fr. Upul Kuruppuarachchi, Chairman of the Udunuwara Pradeshiya Sabha Mr. Asitha Ranaweera, and a number of clergy, officials, and well-wishers.
The Diocese expressed its appreciation to the governmental and cultural authorities for their support and interest in safeguarding this historic Anglican landmark for future generations.
